The 6

To celebrate the year 1974, a painting depicting the 50th manufacturing anniversary of a little British sportscar, the Triumph TR6. This particular "6" has been with the current owner for over 20 years when they purchased it in boxes, totes and pieces. It was a total frame off restoration project that started in March of 2004 and was completed 8 years later in August of 2012.

The mood of this painting is from a summer stroll along a winding boulevard on a warm summer night while watching a sunset over the mighty Niagara River. An abundance of colours were used to create various tones and hues which are documented in the various sittings below.

The sketch & sky

To start this oil on canvas, an outline (sketch) was applied using acrylic black. After that, a liquid white base was applied using equal parts of titanium white, linseed oil and turpenoid. This was quickly applied and immediately following was the colours of the sky using manganese blue hue, alizarin crimson and Indian Yellow.

The Sketch

Applying a thin coat of acrylic black

Wet on wet quickly adding manganese blue hue, alizarin crimson and Indian yellow to the sky

When you're left handed, you have to deal with smudge marks. The struggle is real!

Trees and shrubs completed with sap green, cadmium yellow and Vandyke brown

Ivory black added to back trunk followed with dashboard & headrests in yellow ochre, alizarin crimson, cadmium yellow with a trace of Vandyke brown

Tonnue cover completed with titanium white, yellow ochre, dot of Vandyke Brown & Prussian Blue. Dark hue of car completed with alizarin crimson & permanent bright green

Taillights completed with cadmium red hue, cadmium yellow with a tiny bit of alizarin crimson, titanium white and payne's gray to the smokey white lights. Start of chrome bumper with zinc white, payne's gray and burnt umber

Trying to resume detailing of the "6" but switch up the brushes and added more background to foreground

Detailing tyres and rims mixing Payne's Gray, Titanium White the stippling hints of Ivory Black

Almost time to push the brushes down. Few more details then signature

Finalized a slight shadow on the rims & tyres completed with signature

Canvas complete and ready to cure for a year
