Iceland Oil on Canvas: Glacier Lagoon-Part I

Iceland - 2016, Oil on Canvas Creations

It was a difficult decision to only paint one project of Iceland's beauty and concluded two projects will be displayed from start to finish on this page. While sideline preparations of a new wooden palette placed the larger project on hold, a painting titled "BFF&E" (Best Friends Forever & Ever) will be created and displayed directly below. BFF & E, Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

After two bottles of wine and one night of planning a trip of a lifetime, two Best Friends ventured onto/into Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon to capture the beauty of icebergs and friendship,

#1 Quick little sketching to check proportions and the horizon

#2 Detailing dark paint mixed with Linseed Oil

#3 Adding highlights and faux fur detail

#4 Other faux fur detail with cap and body highlights

#5 Starting to work in the boots and finishing shades of the BFF & E

#6 Working in a slight impasto sky and ocean wave caps

#7 Start of the ice formations with touch of waves on right

#8 Blue of Glaciers being applied.

#9 Still tweaking the Glacier colour.

#10 Start of the platform to which they stand.

#11 Detailing Glaciers while adding lower left water colours

#12 Finishing center Glaciers working right to left.

#13 Adding Ocean waves with contrasting white caps.

#14 Canvas completely covered. Needs to cure for a few days.

#15 Other than painting bottom edge and signature, this is it!

Different technique - different tools:

With switching up the technique being applied to this visual, a larger palette is required. While a new wooden palette was obtained, preconditioning of surface is necessary to make sure the board will last a long time. Three coats of Boiled Linseed Oil is being applied with a 400 grit sand in between coats. The board must then sit for about a week to allow the oil to penetrate and prepare it for globs of oil paints. See you in a week!
