For a family friend, I decided to challenge my artistic boundaries and paint not only a horse but a horse and her Filly. The inspired photo was taken on June 21, 2009 at 7:45 pm by Scott Erwin during an evening cool down of Momma Thoroughbred, Valid Wire (aka Mini Me) and her filly Alana. Care and detail went into creating this 9x12 oil on canvas painting taking it slow over the course of 4 months.
The palette colours consisted primarily of Ivory Black, Payne's Grey, Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Van Dyke Brown, Indian Red, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Titanium White and Soft Blending White.
When the colours were dry enough, a glaze consisting of 1/3 linseed oil, 1/3 turpentine and 1/3 Damar varnish was applied to the barn boards with adding a small amount of Van Dyke Brown. A quick flip to the canvas to finish the bottom edge of the gallery wrapped canvas was completed then a final white wash was applied to enhance the dust on the arena floor by mixing the same ratio of linseed oil, turpentine and Damar varnish with Titanium White.
The painting has since been completed and ready to give to the recipient in a few weeks time after curing a little more.
